BACKLASH: Greens in crisis lash "these Jews"

israeliflagThe NSW Greens are in a deeply troubled funk, caused by the enormous community backlash against their hateful and disgusting boycott of Israel, a policy calculated at undermining the Jewish state, with Senator-Elect Lee Rhiannon bizarrely reflecting that the Greens need to promote the policy even more (!) in an amusing friendly-fire article by Antony Loewenstein, whose record of Israel bashing is probably only exceeded by Hamas.

“Low-blow” as he is cordially known reveals not only that the Greens party is considering attempting to silence its many critics in high-priced defamation (and has singled out News Ltd’s Andrew Bolt and Penbo) action but also the deep hatred of Jamie Parker at “these Jews.” As we will see, it’s a disturbing rant.

RIGHT SAID FRED
The Reverend Fred Nile MLC clearly has a wry sense of humour about their pain. Members of the VEXNEWS Investigations Unit embedded in the NSW Parliament report that Nile has the misfortune of having his parliamentary office immediately adjacent to those of the Greens MPs. He has made it clear where he stands by proudly displaying this week in his office window a flag of the State of Israel. Love his work.

BOO HOO
His former upper-house colleague Lee Rhiannon is crying into her chai latte about the whole thing, sharing with New Matilda’s readers her angst about why the wheels fell of the Greens power-lust bid for lower-house representation:

NSW Senator-elect Lee Rhiannon acknowledged to New Matilda that the Greens could have explained BDS better both internally and externally: “Months before the election we needed to explain why the Greens backed BDS and we needed to work closer with our allies on BDS; academics, the Arab community and social justice movements in Sydney and Melbourne. Collectively we didn’t do enough to amplify support for BDS and show that this is part of an international movement.”

Ominously, the Senator-Elect speaks of working with “the Arab community” to promote a boycott on Israel. This deplorable plot to encourage, exploit and promote hostility between Australian Jews and those of Arab descent to rescue the Greens party from a political nightmare is ugly enough, but what’s worse is the deep ignorance it shows. We know plenty of Arabs – Lebanese Christians and many others besides – who are appalled not just by the idea of boycotting Israel but also by those few foul fanatics who fling filth at the Jewish state.

We also think it’s very telling Rhiannon constantly refers to the digusting and contemptible boycott of Jewish commerce by an empty-sounding apparently harmless acronym, “BDS”.

No mention of the boycott word, the divestment word or the sanctions word. No mention of its effects on real people and a real country whose own survival since 1949 has been nothing short of miraculous.

THE POLICY THAT DAREN’T SPEAK ITS NAME
Just “BDS”, they call it.

Rhiannon doesn’t mention the words because it’s a scandalous policy. Too embarrassing and shameful to spell out. A throwback to the darkest days in the history of the world.

If Israel’s defenders can win in Balmain and Marrickville, they can win anywhere.

Is that VEXNEWS hyperbole you know so well? Not at all. The Greens “BDS” policy – of boycotts, divestment and sanctions for the Jewish state – is calculated at doing nothing less than undermining the viability of Israel, imperilling the lives of six million Jews in Israel. Boycotts of Israeli exports, bans on investment in Israel, other sanctions designed to shut the country down could not have any other effect or be designed to have any other effect.

A VICTORY FOR DECENCY
That this policy was so emphatically rejected by the lefty communities of Balmain and Marrickville is a tremendous source of encouragement to those who sometimes think Israel is fighting a losing PR battle it can never win, judged by standards no country could ever meet, cursed by UN politics so heavily weighted in favour of the world’s worst and most odious regimes.

If Israel’s defenders can win in Balmain and Marrickville, they can win anywhere.

SPLITTING IN TWO
And beyond Rhiannon, the Greens are splitting apart on the issue, as Loewenstein reported:

Just retired Greens MLC Ian Cohen told New Matilda that he thinks it (the Greens policy of boycotting Israel) was a major factor, a position he’s held, with various degrees of consistency, for some time. He’s opposed to BDS, believes it unfairly targets Israel and ignores other gross human rights abuses across the world: “Many pro-Israel people worried about the lack of consistency and this included Greens members. Nothing was said about dictatorships in the Arab world from the Greens … I believe there is a huge scope for criticism of Israeli behaviour against the Palestinian people but BDS for the Greens was an old style, in the trenches method of pushing a campaign. It wasn’t properly assessed how it would affect the NSW election campaign. The Jewish community outrage had a significant impact on our candidates.”

You bet it did. And it will continue to do so.

THE EVIL EMPIRE STRIKES BACK
It gets better. Despite attacking developers for silencing community activism by using defamation writs, the Greens party has a high-priced critic-silencing programme ready to roll:

The Greens are now examining possible legal action against writers who have potentially defamed members as anti-Semitic .(News Limited’s Andrew Bolt is one of the worst offenders.)

Bring. It. On.

We really hope they do. In case we hadn’t said it clearly enough in the past: if you push anti-Semitic, racist policies calculated to undermine the viability of the Jewish state then you are an anti-Semite. Fiona Byrne did this. Fiona Byrne, therefore, is an anti-Semite and is unfit for public office of any kind. Our message to Fiona Byrne (for the sake of judicial clarity): Suck it up, racist.

We’d gladly defend a defamation claim on any of this, any time, any place. Singling out Israel with insanely unfair criticism is racist. Judging the Jewish state by impossible standards that couldn’t be applied to any other nation is racist. It is anti-Semitism. A boycott is just a practical implementation of anti-Semitism and racism.

Our position on legal threats is the same as it ever was: we will stand up to any bully from billionaires down to the gutter. Too many Greens and extreme-leftists are willing to check their free-speech-enthusiasm at the door when it comes to attacking their own foes. Their humbug is limitless. They are bullies who when confronted squeal and carry on like stuck pigs.

THE BULLY FROM BALMAIN (OR HOW HORNY GOAT WEED MADE JAMIE LIMP)
And lest there be any doubt the Greens are bullies, consider the foul musings of bitter and twisted dud candidate in Balmain Jamie Parker. The real reason for Parker’s dismal result (he ran third) was his involvement in a shonky vitamin company that promoted Horny Goat Weed but he’s blaming the Jews, according to Loewenstein:

When the Murdoch press editor David Penberthy wrote that, “[Fiona] Byrne’s been busy advocating a polite modern rendering of Kristallnacht in the Inner West”, Parker hoped progressive Jews he knew would condemn the offensive comparison. They did not. “These Jews provide cover for extreme actions if they occur. If there’s a sniff of you being critical of Israel, such Jews will attack you and cut you loose.” BDS simply made many Jewish people unreasonable and extremely upset, Jews told Parker.

Parker says that the reaction of the Zionist lobby and local Jewish community during the election has revealed that they are willing to allow smears and violent actions against the Greens. Parker, who has spent years working on collaborative projects between local Jews and Palestinians, is now fed up with what he sees as Jewish silence. Local Jewish leaders have contacted him since Saturday to try and repair the damage but they still refuse to apologise for aggressive Jewish behaviour.

Consider the chilling words attributed by New Matilda to Jamie Parker:

“These Jews”…

“Jews will attack you and cut you loose”

“Zionist lobby”

“fed up with what he sees as Jewish silence”

“they (the Jews) still refuse to apologise for aggressive Jewish behaviour”

SELF-CRITICISM LACKING
Parker’s misplaced anger should be re-directed from the Jewish people and back towards his own misconduct in spruiking Horny Goat Weed.

It’s a big call to say someone is unfit for public office. It’s not something we say lightly.

When the Greens have elected representatives like Lee Rhiannon and failed candidates like anti-Semite Fiona Byrne and Jamie Parker whose anger at “these Jews” is about as disturbing as anything you’d hear in a Ku Klux Klan meeting, they are flirting with the dark side of politics that hates Jews, judges the Jewish state by unique standards and implements policies designed to undermine Israel’s viability and therefore endanger the lives of millions. If you dare, go to the neo-Nazi Stormfront online forum website and see how keen they are about boycotts of Israel. It’s scary stuff. They hope that BDS will achieve what countless Arab armies have failed to do: defeat Israel once and for all and drive its citizens into the sea.

Re-badging Israel-hating policies with a Greens party triangle doesn’t change a thing. Concern for the plight of Palestinians must never be manifested in undermining Israel’s security or viability. If the lefty inner-city communities of Balmain and Marrickville can understand this, there’s hope.

Our disparagement of the extreme-left Greens party can be considerable. But it’s never been more justified than in this case. They are staring into a political abyss of their own choosing.

THURSDAY 3PM UPDATE: Another twist in this sordid saga comes as sources close to Jamie Parker reveal to VEXNEWS that he disputes the quotes attributed to him by “journalist” Antony Loewenstein. “Low-blow” does have a reputation for misquoting or quote-fabricating so we might have to give Parker the benefit of the doubt unless the “journalist” can produce a recording. With friends like Loewenstein, Parker probably doesn’t need any more enemies. Interestingly though Parker has not publicly distanced himself from the hate-speech attributed to him by his left-wing friends.

Who are these people? I don’t understand these people who hate the Jewish folks, while all the while not even acknowledging the atrocities of the Arab/Muslim states. After the creation of Israel by the UN the country was immediately set upon by their Arab neighbors and have been at war continuously since then!

  2. treesnotgreens

Jamie Parker is misdirecting his anger if indeed aimed at Jews.

He should blame his not too clever Marrickville mayor.

Parker knows that all corflutes were aimed at and put up in Marrickville.

NOT ONE POSTER WAS ERECTED NORTH OF PARRAMATTA RD,
because of his good work of cooperation between jewish and Palestinian communities.
    He was not targeted.
    He was left alone.

Fiona Byrne, unfortunately for him caused colateral damage into his turf.

he should be looking at Byrne and the spider at the centre of the dark web—-Rhiannon.

  3. DaveB

Considering Israel gets a $3 billion a year subsidy courtesy of the American taxpayer I’m pretty sure that Marrickville city council’s Israel boycott was pretty ineffectual.

  4. Great article Andrew! Good work!

Well you’ve either got very deep pockets yourself, or you’re in for a hiding after this rant. Good work indeed.

The Greens are probably the only party to have had 50% of state representatives Jewish.
I think you are intentionally misrepresenting Parker – when he says “These Jews” he is talking about particular individuals not people in general.

  8. Mona Peli

Further it is untrue to say that Parker was not targeted – his election billboards were spraypainted with swastikas.
It is a shame that you all seem un-aware of the fact that it is the opponents of the BDS, not its supporters, who are flirting with the nazis see J-wire

Thanks for alerting us to the boycott. I think it’s agreat idea I’m going to let all my friends and family know.
    Apartheid is so not right.

What is even more interesting is the way that the Greens ‘disappeared’ their policy. Lowenstein, on his blog, quotes the Greens media release announcing that the State Convention of the Greens passed the BDS policy.

But if you look at the compilation of media releases on the NSW Greens website, there is this ‘mysterious’ gap of five days where there appears to be NO official NSW Greens releases.

What happened to the policy announcement? Where did it go? Sent to the Gulag and photoshopped out of existence. All rather Stalinist, isn’t it Comrades…?

Cut or uncut, I’ll take them all on after the Kennedy room.

    @DaveB:
Dave – the Gazan Arabs have called for this BDS nonsense to stop

It’s had no effect on Israel but it has reduced the amount of work available to them !!

  14. Shirlee

    Excellent piece Andrew.

I am sure Bolt and those named are shaking in their boots

Bring it on I say, as this could well be the demise of the Greens. hallelujah !!!

To be anti-zionist is not to be antisemitic. There are many anti-zionist jews, both liberal and orthodox.

Are we getting dangerously close to an understanding, an accord even?

For example, we are nervous to discuss islam and multiculturalism, or islam and the boat people situation. We are nervous because we fully expect to be branded extremist rascist islamophobes by Tony Jones and Jon Faine.

And yet we delight (rightly) in highlting the rascism, phobias and hipocracy informing the Greens platform regarding Israel.

  17. Harry The B

Me thinks the good people of NSW have boycotted, divested and sanctioned the Greens, going by their appalling vote in last weeks election.

It must be infuriating being Green. You know you’re right about everything and no one listens. Tsk Tsk.

Now I propose a BDS of the Greens. I will no longer buy vibrating crystals, angel wings or have my Chakras buffed.

Oh, and I’ll be burning a briquette tonight just for fun.

    I still like beans.

    Oh really?

“But Mr Cohen, who is retiring, took a different view, calling the inability to secure either of the lower house seats a ”huge disappointment”. He said the Israel boycott had likely contributed. ”Electorally it could have made the difference in both those seats,” he said, though he believed the party was right to take a principled stance.”

And here’s some stuff on BDS from that notorious hive of anti-semitism:

    Home

    http://jewishvoiceforpeace.org/tiaa-cref

    “TIAA-CREF: Divest from the occupation

“Ask one of the largest financial services in the United States to divest from companies that profit from the Israeli occupation.

“Join over 19,500 people of conscience who have already signed the petition to ask TIAA-CREF to stop investing in companies that profit from the Israeli occupation of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.”

Dare I say: ploise explayn, vexnews, ploise explaaaaaaayne?

The Green are the new force, ready to take the reins of power and stear government in the right direction for the people, run by the people to plant trees and build wind farms and solar panels…sorry i must have hit my head and thought i was Wendy for a moment, great result for the scum on the weekend, yet again let down by their fantastic attempts to trump their chances but not acctually bother to get out and campaign. The arrogance of the extreme greens must make you laugh, if not its just sad- sad little people with no idea what they are doing in the democratic process. Now we await the Wendy’s patented rant- get the popcorn.

Erstwhile Greens Party voters in Marrickville appear to have quite sensibly thrown out the BDS with the bong water. How else to explain the collapse in support over the two weeks prior to the election? Senator-elect Rhiannon seems to think this BDS policy will be a winner if it is propagated more widely. She will undoubtedly be a great asset to the Greens Party in Canberra.

  22. Fiona Ogilvie

It is good to see extremists lose and then they go thrashing about it.
    May it continue.

  23. VEXNEWS

@Zaf: Explain what? That there are people who hold Israel to impossibly high standards they apply to no other nation?

That even the mere mention of the word ‘boycott’ in relation to Jewish commerce was clearly always going to be deeply, deeply troubling and upsetting, reminiscent as it is of some very bleak times.

This is racism. When it comes from people who share a religious tradition with the targets of their racism, then it is perplexing, I’ll grant you, but it does not change what it is.

I truly hope that we can move beyond the sickening words of hate that spew out of some people’s mouths when it comes to Israel.

Apartheid. Laughable when you consider how cosmopolitan a society Israel has nurtured, with all colours of the rainbow, living in a mostly harmonious and peaceful society.

Boycotts. Sickening when you consider the long, lamentable history of boycotts of Jewish commerce. Deeply disturbing when you consider the effect boycotts, divestment and sanctions which would be to do nothing less than undermine the viability and security of that peaceful society.

“These Jews”. Where do I start? Jamie Parker is lower than the shit on my shoe, does that tell you honestly enough what we think of him? Is that an adequate explanation. The arrogant, patronising, contemptible presumption of this jummped-up dodgy vitamin vendor is just beyond belief. Making up tales about “aggressive Jews”, talking about how “these Jews” owe him an apology for how hard done by he is. He is worse than we described in that article which was toned down considerably from first draft (we self-censor quite a bit, you know). He needs counselling to deal with an attitude and prejudice so ingrained.

I hope that offers the explanation you seek.

    Cheers,

How will Green candidates propose that Australia survives without flat-plate solar hot-water systems, drip irrigation, memory sticks, mobile phones, other computery bits (eg dual core core-duo), cherry tomatoes and most importantly (for certain Greens at least), epilators??

These are all Israeli inventions and VexNews should ensure/ask Ms Byrne, Senator-elect Rhiannon how the BDS will deal with them.

Of course, Australian stem cell research will now be off the agenda as it relies on early Israeli advances too – how does this fit with Greens R and D/stem cell commitments??

And while they are at it, they can also explain to Australian sufferers of MS why they should not be allowed to use Copaxone and Laquinimod – again, developed in Israel.

This ugly boycott has Lee Rhiannon’s grubby fingerprints all over it. God knows what will happen when she enters the Senate in July. The last thing we need is an unreconstructed Socialist posing as an environmentalist whipping up division and hatred in the Australian community. Gillard must distance herself from the Greens rabble at all costs or she will pay a high price.

You have to be impressed by the Chutzpah of Adrian Jackson claiming: “Nothing wrong with the Jewish religion”.

Adrian Jackson is an unrepentant antisemite. Like many others, he is also a failure in life and presumably holds some resentment towards Jewish people for no particularly valid reason.

Apropos Loewenstein’s bile, as published in New Matilda (Diet-Crikey),is exactly the sort of unsourced, biased and shameful tripe we’ve come to expect from Antony Loewenstein and clearly New Matilda had hit the bottom of the barrel and are now looking under the barrel for their material.

From the article: “Local Jewish leaders have contacted him since Saturday to try and repair the damage but they still refuse to apologise for aggressive Jewish behaviour. ”

What exactly are they supposed to apologise for, Antony?

Is there any actual evidence (as opposed to Loewenstein’s fantasy) that any of these events – if they actually happened – were perpetrated by Jews?

Were the “Countless letters” (which I am sure could have been counted, denying Loewenstein the opportunity for hyperbole) signed by Jewish people? Or were they merely pissed off Marrickville ratepayers? Who cares. Let’s blame the Jews. All of them.

Apparently signs were covered in swastikas. I can’t think of many Jewish people who would do that. Is Antony sure it wasn’t in fact a sign of support for these policies, by local Nazi sympathizers? There aren’t even that many Jewish people living in the area. Again, let’s not let facts or evidence get in the way of a bit of Jew-bashing, eh? Clearly it was the local Jewish Spraypaint Gang.

I wonder if readers are aware that Fiona Byrne was caught vandalising political posters, as exposed by Vexnews. Hypocrite much?

As for these “Death threats”, give me a break.

Antony himself has been whinging for years about all the “Death threats” he claims to receive. Yet has he ever required police protection? Of course not. I doubt he’s even mentioned it to them.

It’s a publicity/sympathy stunt only. Jews don’t issue Fatwas and nobody could possibly be in any danger for picking on the Jews. Antony of all people would know that.

So was the fact the Greens got canned in every other electorate also part of the Jewish conspiracy? Or is it just possible, that people can see how worthless and destructive the Greens are? Oh no. Antony will have us convinced it was all a scary Zionist plot of doom….

Bottom line: New Matilda is happy to publish completely unsubstantiated rumours by a writer well known for writing dishonest and error-filled pieces vilifying Israel and the Jewish community.

    @Zaf: Explain what?

    Dear Vexnews

    Your article says (caps added):

“Just retired Greens MLC Ian Cohen told New Matilda that he thinks it (the Greens policy of boycotting Israel) was a major factor, a position he’s held, with various degrees of consistency, for some time. HE’S OPPOSED TO THE BDS, believes it unfairly targets Israel and ignores other gross human rights abuses across the world”

But in an excerpt from a SMH article (caps added):

    http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/state-election-2011/greens-put-on-a-brave-face-20110327-1cc0z.html

“But Mr Cohen, who is retiring, took a different view, calling the inability to secure either of the lower house seats a ”huge disappointment”. He said the Israel boycott had likely contributed. ”Electorally it could have made the difference in both those seats,” he said, though HE BELIEVED THE PARTY WAS RIGHT TO TAKE A PRINCIPLED STAND.”

So are you misleading your readers, or is the SMH misleading theirs? Perhaps Ian Cohen has many, contradictory, opinions, and both you and the SMH are correct? ? Does Ian Cohen think BDS is a good thing or not? Good but not principled? Principled but not good?

    Ploise. Explaynn.

[That even the mere mention of the word ‘boycott’ in relation to Jewish commerce]

    Meh.

Is a boycott of Israel a boycott of all Jews? In that case how come some Jews support the BDS? Are they boycotting themselves, maybe? Or do they differentiate Israeli Jews from ALL Jews – is the former a subset of the latter?

What about the Israelis who aren’t Jewish? So is the boycott 80% against some Jews and 20% against some Muslims and Christians?

You see how problematic it is to conflate Jewish and Israeli.

    [This is racism. ]

Against which race? Are Israelis a race? Are Jews a race or a religious group? Falash Mura and Ashkenazi? Both Jews, but….????

[When it comes from people who share a religious tradition with the targets…then it is perplexing, I’ll grant you, but it does not change what it is.]

Hint: perhaps they see it as a moral issue. I know this is challenging, but consider it for a moment. Remember, you can’t tell all Jews what they should think about a subject, even when that subject is Israel. Opinions are diverse. Some are based on tribal solidarity, some on morality, most on a combination of the two.

[Apartheid. Laughable when you consider how cosmopolitan a society Israel has nurtured]

    * sigh *

From that notoriously anti-semitic Hebrew daily, Haaretz:

    http://www.haaretz.com/print-edition/opinion/segregation-of-jews-and-arabs-in-2010-israel-is-almost-absolute-1.321728

“Segregation of Jews and Arabs in Israel of 2010 is almost absolute. For those of us who live here, it is something we take for granted. But visitors from abroad cannot believe their eyes: segregated education, segregated businesses, separate entertainment venues, different languages, separate political parties … and of course, segregated housing. In many senses, this is the way members of both groups want things to be, but such separation only contributes to the growing mutual alienation of Jews and Arabs.”

Not convinced? Let’s ask one of Israel’s former Attorney Generals.

    http://www.shalomlife.com/eng/5170/Israeli_Apartheid:_Fact_or_Fiction/

“Despite its best intentions, Israel has created a system of separation in the West Bank which fits the textbook definition of apartheid. According to Michael Ben-Yair, Attorney General of Israel throughout the nineties, “In effect, we established an apartheid regime in the Occupied Territories immediately following their capture. That oppressive regime exists to this day.” He is not alone in asserting this perspective. Many notable Israelis like Meron Benvenisti, Akiva Elder, and Shulamit Aloni, to mention a few, agree that Israeli style apartheid is a reality.”

What do South Africans who lived through Apartheid themselves think?

    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/this-is-like-apartheid-anc-veterans-visit-west-bank-865063.html

“Even with the system of permits, even with the limits of movement to South Africa, we never had as much restriction on movement as I see for the people here,” said an ANC parliamentarian, Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge of the West Bank. “There are areas in which people would live their whole lifetime without visiting because it’s impossible.”

Mrs Madlala-Routledge, a former deputy health minister in President Thabo Mbeki’s government, added: “While I want to be careful not to characterise everything that I see here as apartheid, I just do find comparisons in a number of places. I also find differences.”

[ “These Jews”. Where do I start?]

How about with ‘Those Jews”. “Some Jews”. “Other Jews”. “Two Jews.” “Three Jews”. “No Jews”. “Young Jews”. “Old Jews”. “Israeli Jews”. “Australian Jews”. “Right wing Jews”. “Green Jews”. “Communist jews”. “Feminist Jews”. “Hassidic Jews”.

Iow, meditate on adjectives and their purely descriptive uses for the purposes of differentiating between different parts of a whole. Ommmmm!!!

But Vexnews. Answer me this. Sometimes you write these truly clever, insightful pieces about things like the Sudan. And then you turn around and public this kind unintelligent pap about Israel and BDS. (And the unintelligent cherry picking of phrases or adjectives…)

Why can’t you always be smart, Vexnews? That way you’d always be impressive, even if I didn’t agree with you.

I’m saddened by your lack of consistency. Why, vexnews, why?

  31. Shirlee

That anyone could support the Greens, when they support the BDS.

The BDS, is a global organisation, whose basic agenda is the destruction of the State of Israel. Whose founder openly speaks of a Two State Solution as being “A Palestine next to a Palestine, rather than a Palestine next to an Israel”.

How can anyone of any race, religion, creed or colour support a group who calls for the annihilation of a country.???

    Mind blowing

  32. Real

A very good piece. You should point out however that is the NSW Greens who are a breed apart and this policy is not supported in other states and territories.

The Greens have many excellent policies and positions, but foreign policy isn’t where they should be getting involved.

I love the state of Israel as much as I love the land of my birth Australia, the land of my parents Italy and the land of the free the United States of America. Each of these countries holds a special place in my heart.

I will defend Israel’s right to exist within secure borders in peace and prosperity with every neuron in my brain and every corpuscle in my veins.

Sure, Israel is not perfect but it is the least imperfect state in the Middle East with a proud history of democracy, tolerance, rule of law, freedom of belief, free speech and economic and social progress. That it has been able to maintain such freedoms in the context of such threats to its very existence is a triumph of which its civil leaders and citizens should be rightly congratulated.

There has always been a hypocritical tinge of racism in the broad left movement in Australia over its support for violence against Israeli citizens. This anti-semitism is impossible to reconcile with the intellectual contribution to left thought of the fundamentally socialist ideology of Zionism and the Jewish ancestry of the founder of communism, Karl Marx. Leaving aside the contribution of Marx, if we are being fair, we must acknowledge the fact that those born into Jewish culture, religion and society have regularly been amongst the most significant contributors to the advance of humanity whether it be in literature, medicine, science, political thought, sociology, ethics, philosophy, economics or religion.

After all, the founder of my church was a Jew, a very devout one at that, and I pray to him every day. When he moved on, he left another Jew in charge.

    @Joe B:

Joe, I was impressed by your description of Rhiannon as ‘an unreconstructed Socialist posing as an environmentalist’. It strikes me there are many in the Greens movement who could well wear that tag. So many of the usual ‘tells’ are there, including this ridiculous focus on Israel.

Balmain – the home of “My names McGooley whats yours” TV show in the late 1960’s and Dawn Fraser Independent MP and now this.

  42. Sandy Greenstreet

If Adolph was alive and young, he would be supporting the NSW greens policy.

  43. treesnotgreens

The campaign against the vile antisemitic policy of Fiona Byrne and the nsw Greens was conducted totally and only in Marrickville.

    Jamie Parker was not targeted.
No signs, no corflutes, no stickers went up in Balmain.
Anyone involved in these 2 campaigns run side by side knows that.

Parker was known and even used as a contrast to Byrne, as a peacemaker, and a practical reasonable person intersted in cooperation between people–not conflict.
I have been reliably informed that Fiona Byrne was advised from within her own circle to not follow the path of confrontation, but she didnt listen.
She chose to fight with isolation of Israel as her catchcry.
Now she can look in the mirror and blame herself for the defeat only she could have mastered from the certain victory she would have had 2 weeks earlier before the anti Byrne activists got going-(-ie when Byrne and her flunky Kieren produced an insane you tube piece admitting to stealing corflutes from the opposition and intending to resell stolen property.)

Jamie Parker should now be cognisant that if he gets over the line, that he does so having had intentionally no campaign against him by those who did help to bring Byrne down.

Loewenstein as a journalist and as a human dispalys many of the characteristics of a hyena…..except that he isnt laighing anymore…having been caught out again msuoting, just as Byrne was lying.

  44. Dan Lewis

@treesnotgreens, while I fully agree with you that Loewenstein is a liar your earlier comment that: “Fiona Byrne was advised from within her own circle to not follow the path of confrontation” misses the point.

The problem wasn’t that her decision to boycott the Jewish state was controversial politics that might cost her a seat. It was that it’s simply a terrible and undeniably anti-Semitic idea.

I regret that a number of Greens insiders seem to only be considering the electoral ramifications of the Greens’ decision, rather than viewing through the idea of right and wrong. It’s a bit like apologising for getting caught, rather than apologising for what you’ve done.

Not getting involved is one thing. Not speaking out against a boycott of Jewish products is another altogether. Silence is acceptance and regardless of what Loewenstein wrote, that’s how the Greens stand to be judged.

  45. Green on the outside but bigots inside

The Greens are fast becoming moth balls – green on the outside by white Australia on the inside.

Their smaller Australia population stance is just One Nation ‘we are full’ migration policy.

Social bigotry is on the rise in the affluent inner city areas where the Greens rule with NYMBY zeal as they constantly rally against ‘outsiders’ (other wise known as everyday Australians trying to get to work). So it is no surprise that these low level Greens councillors are targeting Jews and Israel.

This playing of the ethno-religious card by the Greens is dangerous and also designed to give the Greens some appeal in high migrant Labor areas. It is no surprise that areas in Sydney’s west and Melbourne’s north and west have been shown to have the highest levels of anti-Jewlish sentiment. People fear what they do not have contact with and these areas have small numbers of Jewish people.

Unfortunately ignorance and fear about Jewish people is still a factor in parts of Europe and in Muslim countries and Australian media still does not do enough to combat it here.

Extreme elements of the Greens are playing to this bigotry at local levels as we have seen in inner western Sydney.

A local council calling for a boycott in isolation of a particular country is an attack on racial and religious harmony in Australia.

These ‘Greens bigots’ are playing with fire and Bob Brown must bring them to account.

It is time for the Greens to eject the racists and NYMBY bigots from their party.

You don’t think calling somebody an anti-semite is at all defamatory? Or even less defamatory, say, than accusing a blogger of posting comments to his own blog?

The problem you have with quoting that new matilda article is that people might actually go and read it (yet I don’t see any links here to the original article, so I’ll try adding one:

    http://newmatilda.com/2011/03/30/are-greens-ready-hard-ball

Anyone who actually reads that will find your brief quotes a bit surprising. Jamie Parker is quite obviously talking about jewish friends and leaders looking the other way while a fairly obvious smear campaign is under way, then trying to make nice afterward. “These jews” is not a vague collective term – he’s quite clear about which jews he meant.

I doubt that the greens you mention are anti-semites. It’s essentially impossible for any intelligent, non-religious person to genuinely hate jews for being jews. The problem these people have is with israel – the second-largest community of jews in the world (after the jewish population of the US, obviously). And their problem is quite clearly not on religious or ethnic grounds – its with israel’s human-rights record. You might disagree with them about that (I mostly disagree as well, inasmuch as I think the palestinians are at least half of the problem), but to try to make out they’re something other than they are is tiresome.

  48. mike lyvers

Techno, ask yourself this: why do they focus so relentless on Israel? There are numerous countries with vastly worse human rights records, many of them in the Middle East. So why don’t the Greens advocate a boycott of Iran? China? Saudi Arabia? – on human rights abuse grounds. There is only one possible explanation: anti-semitism.

  49. Dan Lewis

    @Techno:

You don’t think calling somebody an anti-semite is at all defamatory?

    Not if they are one.

I am sure that there are some people who act in a wholly anti-Semitic manner and may be oblivious too it. Rather like a five year old making a comment in the school playground about a “Jew”, merely because he grew up hearing that sort of thing.

So those people might genuinely resent being called an anti-Semite and will usually counter with the well-known “Some of my best friends are Jewish” excuse, as though it somehow changes what they’ve said or done.

People can change, for example reformed Palestinian terrorist Walid Shoebat who started his career with the PLO, trying to murder Jews but is now an outspoken supporter of America and Israel (who lives in fear thanks to the large number of Muslims who want to murder him).

One can only hope those who stand accused of antisemitism take it as a wake-up call and have a good think about what sort of person they want to be.

  50. Zaf

    @ mike Iyvers

    It’s because Israel cares.

The other countries you listed have no desire to be seen as democracies. Iran has lived for many years with economic sanctions. (So they have been tried against them, just saying.)

Israel has a great desire to be seen as a democracy – hence the mental gymnastics about staying Jewish AND democratic – and the remote possibility of a BDS having some impact. It’s more along the lines of South Africa and Apartheid than Saudi or Sudan or Iran.

  51. Techno

“So why don’t the Greens advocate a boycott of Iran? China? Saudi Arabia?”

Australia already participates in UN and independent sanctions against a number of other countries, including iran:

    http://www.dfat.gov.au/un/unsc_sanctions/index.html

So I’m not quite sure what the greens would be asking for there. I certainly don’t see them arguing AGAINST those sanctions. They probably did take a stand against iraq sanctions, but that was for some fairly concrete reasons (accurately perceived or otherwise).

As for saudi arabia, I’m not sure we actually buy very much from them. Sure, they’re an oil exporter, but I think you’ll find the greens are already quite keen to reduce the consumption of that, and oil is kind of a commodity – it doesn’t much matter who we buy it from. We sell them quite a few cars, but it would be a bit silly to argue not to SELL somebody produce.

    As for china:

    http://www.phayul.com/news/article.aspx?id=29167

    http://www.dynamicbusiness.com.au/news/australia-urged-to-boycott-china-over-google-attack4978.html

I don’t think they’re “relentlessly focusing” on israel – I think they just have a position and they’re sticking to it. It’s not like greens never criticize anyone else.

  52. Can I just say what a comfort to discover person who really knows what they may be sharing on the internet. You definitely learn how to bring an issue to light and make it valuable. 56. Anonymous

    that is so true!!!!

  57. Techno

Um, what happened in germany in 1931? That’s relevant to the current discussion, I mean.

And no, not everyone you disagree with is hitler.

  58. Adrian Jackson

The Greens (and Labour and Liberals) supported a No Fly Zone over Libya but why no No Fly Zone over Lebanon when Israel was bombing Beirut in 2006?

The Israel Air Force killed about 1000 civilians in Beirut claiming a Hezbollah HQ was there which was rubbish as Hezbollah was actually busy killing lots of IDF invader soldiers on the border.

That’s one for Judge Goldstone to investigate too.

  59. Adrian Jackson

Anon (04 Apr 11) few, if any, Aussies remember 1931 (80 years ago) as we were not born then.

  60. andrewe

let us know if you need some financial support for your legal cases.
The extremist green parties are always suing or threatening free speech. what is it that they have against it?
Is that why they support the countries that dont have free speech against Israel who do?
Their bizarre hatred must run deep.
I guess they see Bolt and others as threats to their monopoly on saying what ever they want about others.
