Palestine Needs Your Help!
In the aftermath of the 2008/09 Gaza Massacre in which 1500 Palestinians died, most of
them civilians, the faking of Australian passports to assist Mossad assassinations, the Israeli
Navy’s murder of 9 humanitarian aid carriers in the recent aid flotilla attack, the ongoing
expansion of illegal Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories and the
ongoing apartheid style treatment of Arab Israelis, it is time for Australians to say enough is
Peace can only begin to take root in the Middle East when the illegal Israeli occupation of
the Palestinian Territories ends and a sovereign, independent Palestinian State is created
under the auspices of international law and the relevant resolutions of the UN Security
Even the US Military have acknowledged that the decades old occupation of Palestine by
Israel is harming their war efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan, which of course endangers our
troops in those countries.
The illegal Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories are seen internationally
and by the Palestinian Authority as the main obstacle to final status negotiations leading to a
two state solution in line with international law.
Further some in Israel are beginning to understand that the settlements themselves threaten
the continued existence of Israel as a Jewish state, if Palestinians see that the expansion
of illegal settlements on their land cannot be stopped and abandon the two state solution
instead pressing for full civil rights within Israel.
There is then growing support for the boycott of products coming from companies that
operate out of illegal Israeli settlements and this boycott is causing those companies to move
out of the settlements.
To date the following national unions have joined this campaign, the AEU, the AMWU and
the CFMEU along with; Unions ACT, Geelong Trades Hall Council, South Coast Labour
Council, Newcastle Trades Hall Council, CFMEU NSW, MUA WA, HACSU Vic, ASU NSW/
ACT Branch, ETU Qld. Internationally the South African, Irish, Scottish and English national
trade union bodies have also joined this campaign.
You can help the establishment of a free secular Palestine by taking the following resolution
back to your union and party branch to consider joining the growing global Boycott,
Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.
Model Resolution for Organisations Joining the Boycott of Goods Produced on Illegal Israeli
Settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories
This Organisation is of the view that peace can only begin to take root in the Middle East
when the illegal Israeli occupation of the Palestinian Territories ends and a sovereign,
independent Palestinian State is created under the auspices of international law and the
relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council.
Further, this Organisation is also of the view that the so called ‘facts on the ground’
presented by the continued expansion of these illegal Israeli settlements present the
most immediate obstacle to meaningful final settlement negotiations between the parties
In all the circumstances we believe that a boycott of products made in the illegal settlements
is justified and is the kind of solidarity action that can send a message loud and clear to the
We further resolve that we will argue for this approach in the labour movement in Australia
including the ACTU and the ALP and that we will also argue for it in international fora as
The approach recommended on the BDS question remains one aspect of the broad
solidarity and support that should be rendered to the long suffering Palestinian people until a
just and lasting peace is secured with a durable two state solution.
