LEAKY BOAT: Email snafu prompts national security fears in two defence ministers’ offices

claresnowdonAustralia’s national security and defence secrets are at jeopardy of leaking due to slack public servants working for federal Defence ministers Rudd-mate Warren Snowdon and leadership aspirant the NSW Right’s Jason Clare.

As federal ministers for Defence Science and Personnel and Defence Materiel respectively, they deal with highly sensitive issues of national security, including multi-billion dollar decisions on procurement and other life-and-death decisions involving the Australian Defence Forces.

YOU ARE ANOTHER DEFENCE DEPARTMENT SNAFU
A member of the VEXNEWS Investigations Unit – a young journalist and student  we have dubbed “Naomi X” from Melbourne who has never worked in a minister’s office or a federal government department – was astonished to receive an email from the highest echelons of national power that detailed spin-doctor’s reactions and proposed responses to Opposition questions in Question Time to a story in The Australian about serious problems with HMAS Tobruk and a probe into the reasons why so many of the Royal Australian Navy’s ships seem incapable of being used in the actual water.

The emails are not classified and of themselves don’t represent a clear and present threat to national security but they do give rise to serious questions about what other federal government secrets are available to foreign powers due to these kinds of mistakes.

The emails involve intimate exchanges between DLO’s Sharelle Mathias from Jason Clare’s office and Carla Roscoe from Warren Snowden’s office, which are then in turn copied to a number of government advisers, including the robust Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Senator Feeney’s public servant Lauren Jarred.

AN OPEN DOOR TO SINO-SPIES
The Daily Telegraph’s ace investigator Simon Benson revealed earlier this year that Chinese hackers had penetrated Prime Minister Gillard’s email account and targeted ten of her ministers.  The previous year, Chinese espionage were believed to have obtained top-secret files on the “stealth design and electronics” of the Joint Strike Fighter, which is being purchased by Australia at a cost of at least $100 billion.

Your leaker seems to have her email sitting in this post wide open, might be an idea to reformat

  3. Snafu 2!

Sienna is right, those hyperlinks are working a bit too well on your WordPress script.

A quick facebook search using the email address of your source, ‘naomie’ finds that her facebook account has evidence that she is an anti-vaccine nutcase.

    fascinating

Although, this seems a little more balanced from your source:

Overpaid twits gorging on the public purse.

Big deal. It would appear that someone has sent an email to the wrong person, not exactly a punishable offence.

You claim this could mean all sorts of secrets could be let loose due to stupid public servants, which is absolute garbage. Most departments email, has two categories (defence probably more) confidential and not confidential. If it is confidential it cant be sent outside of the department by anyone. It cant be on forwarded either.

THe email you have provided are run of the mill email exchanges between the DLO and Ministers office preparing for parliament sitting. You could FOI them if you could be bothered.

Not anti-vaccine. Anti vaccine injury. Who isn’t?

Has the sky fallen in yet? Did this make the earth move for you all?
