SPLITTERS: LNP cracks down on "Liberal Club" Queensland rebels with email warning

lnpsplit The LNP hierarchy and federal Liberal supporting rebels in Queensland are in a pitched battle over the formation of a “Liberal Club” in Queensland. Senior federal Liberal Senator Nick Minchin who has announced his retirement is caught right in the middle of the drama with him addressing the inaugural function of the Liberal Club early next month.

Central to the concerns of the Queensland Liberal rebels is that the merger of the Liberal and National parties was a “takeover not a merger” and that those identified with the old Liberal party are being victimised by a National party dominated party structure. Some think the disunity could have adverse implications for the party after brilliant results in Queensland in the federal election and a seemingly inevitable Labor defeat at a state level after a disastrous reign of error from Premier Anna Bligh whose only competence seems to centre around preventing her caucus from removing her as party leader.

The aggressive move from Liberal rebels to assert their own identity separately from the LNP has infuriated senior LNP figures with an email going out this afternoon from the LNP state director Michael O’Dwyer making it clear the party does not support the formation of the “Liberal Club”:

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Dear LNP members

Over recent weeks some of you may have received communication either by email or through the mail from an organisation calling itself The Liberal Club Queensland Inc.

Please let me reinforce that this organisation is neither associated nor affiliated with the LNP in any way, nor is it endorsed by the LNP.

LNP members are advised to take this into consideration should approaches be made by The Liberal Club Queensland Inc.

Let me further add that only authorised material is distributed via the LNP database, and unless that material carries my signature or the authorisation of LNP Headquarters then it should not be treated as proper Party communication.

Kind regards

Michael O’Dwyer | State Director |

LNP senior figures are concerned the Liberal Club is using membership databases of the LNP to mail and email their notices and that the Club could be misused by those within the LNP or those recently removed from it to agitate for the re-creation of a separate Liberal party.

VEXNEWS understands that prominent federal Liberals like Senator George Brandis and former Howard minister Mal Brough have been very unhappy about the circumstances of the merger of the Queensland Liberal and National parties and that all three are quietly encouraging those promoting the Liberal Club as a vehicle.

One email obtained by VEXNEWS addresses concerns put about by the LNP hierarchy that the Liberal Club is being pushed as a factional vehicle by colourful former federal Minister Santo Santoro.

Others like Glenn Milne who has curiously ended up writing for the ABC’s website and astonishing us by writing interesting articles that are compulsory reading reckons that:

Former state Liberal president, Bob Carroll and former member for Moreton, Gary Hardgrave, have been instrumental in setting up a Liberal ginger group, The Liberal Club of Queensland, which will have its inaugural meeting on December 6.

Hardgrave was suspended from the LNP for disclosing on 4BC that the state party leader John-Paul Langbroek was being undermined by some in his caucus earlier in the year.

He has clearly decided to make his absence felt with some LNP members worried that he is intent on splitting the party. Most observers think that’s extremely unlikely.

Dear fellow Liberal

Our nation and our state needs all people of good character and ambition to work together.

Liberal Club (Qld) Inc. has been formed to bring people together. We will provide a vehicle and a venue for good, positive, social and political interaction for people who share broad ideals, principles and ambitions.

Discussion and informed dissent strengthens our democracy. Reflecting on the importance of the inspiration of the wise words of Edmund Burke, the Liberal Club will provide a way for good men and good women to make the contribution our society needs.

Through the Liberal Club, people across the broad Liberal spectrum will be invited to speak and discuss public policy and political responses which our nation and state need right now.

The Liberal Club is not beholden to sectarian or factional interests. It must belong to those of us who join. Liberal Club membership brings with it responsibilities to ignore the dynamics which divided some against others in the past.

What brings us together is far more powerful and far more important than the things or the people which we may occasionally disagree with. We must promise ourselves to always respect the right of others to disagree with us and work openly together.

You are invited to be part of the Liberal Club. Your involvement will bring with it experience and ambitions. As a group of women and men we will make a difference.

The promise is to keep the cost low and give you constant opportunity to maximise your involvement in a social atmosphere.

On 6 December 2010, a dinner function is being organised. The invitation is enclosed.

You can and will make a difference. It is too important to wait on the sidelines any longer.

Kind regards

im there.. what a great idea for those who have had their views and opinions squashed by the old National’s to have their voices heard..

  2. Julie Stone

yes, i got the email from the LNP today, they look to be running scared and once again are putting their foot down on the Lib’s

  3. Get Real

Not Mal Brough, he’s advising against participation as he is not wanting to upset the apple cart, at present, with his bid to gain membership of the LNP.

  4. all a joke

The funny thing is that the very same ones who were championing the merger because they lost power of the Liberal Party and thought they could regain it through the LNP are now the ones who are whinging longest and loudest. Be careful what you wish for!

  5. Chris.LePyne

Wow, I think I should go. Time to work on my all over body tan in time for the boys this summer.

why not call Bruce McIver himself and ask for his opinion

  7. concerned

I am a former member of the Libs and got the email. I am very concerned by the invasion of my privacy as I did not give permission for my details to be passed onto any third party entities in any way shape or form.

  8. Pain Jentice

Maybe I can sit on Michael Johnson’s table – as long as there are no knives around my back. It is only I who stab people

  9. Joe

There are more people who have joined the lnp since the merger than all these former dissidents who seem to have their noses out of joint. They seem more interested in party power than defeating Bligh.

  10. I know someone that sat at Santo Santoro’s table tonight and there was nothing but high praise for the LNP and working with them to remove the Blight Labor Govt. Note: This story is overblown propaganda verging on self-parody.

Several mentions of the secret password “family” were used. This held my full attention.
